GES-2 is a unique space in Moscow! The conversion of the power station into a cultural center has been carried out at the highest level. The space is very convenient and comfortable for large exhibitions and for accommodating a large number of visitors. There are always seats available in the coworking area and the café, and relevant in summer — it is very cool here.
There is currently an important exhibition "Square and Space | From Malevich to GES-2." One of the curators is Zelfira Tregulova, who left the post of director of the Tretyakov Gallery last year. The other curator — Francesco Bonami — is Italian, the author of several grand projects on contemporary art. If you look at examples of these people's work, you'll understand that it's an explosive mix. Yet they managed to agree, find a consensus, and get the most out of Russian collections, both museum and private. Yes, when it was possible to bring almost anything from Europe, the exhibitions looked light, airy, joyful. Now the incredible effort put into creating the show is felt even in the air, in the exhibition space. But everything turned out well! Huge thanks to the curators and the exhibition venue for that. I should mention that exhibitions at GES-2 are free! Perhaps that is why there are always many young people among the visitors and various informal behaviors that enliven and add color to the exhibitions.
So, what is it about? Just as Russian literature emerged from Gogol's overcoat, so modern artistic movements emerged from Malevich's square. The exhibition is very conventionally divided into styles, and in each section the influence of the "Black Square" is clearly and distinctly visible. Not always specifically Suprematism, but the avant-garde in general. Even the European examples, of which there are many at the exhibition, also very clearly demonstrate this connection. I think even a completely unprepared person will see these obvious parallels. This is the genius of the exhibition itself. And there are outstanding works among the exhibits as well! For me, one is a new work by Erik Bulatov, "The Door", lent to the exhibition by the artist himself, and two works by Alexander Rodchenko, "Black on Black", which belong to different museums but are now displayed on the same wall!
Try not to miss this important project! It is worth coming to the capital for it alone.
