Messages from the past can not only be read but also heard

An exhibition "Receiving Your Letters..." (6+) has opened at the Museum of Military Glory (a department of the Kirov Regional Museum of Local Lore named after P.V. Alabin). It presents rare documents from the local history museum’s collection — letters from soldiers and officers, and from their relatives and loved ones, spanning from the First World War to the present day.

The exhibition begins with letters written by Vyatka residents during the First World War and the Civil Wars. Among them are unique letters from soldier Petr Sokolov, who ended up in Austrian captivity and died during an escape attempt; letters of the residents of the city of Vyatka, whose lives were closely connected with both the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War (World War II).

The second section of the exhibition is devoted to letters from the Great Patriotic War. Especially poignant are the letters of Kirov resident Vera Ananyeva, which she lovingly wrote to her parents. Vera fought in a partisan unit and died very young — she was only 19. Nearby are letters from her father, who, fighting at the front, tries to comfort his wife after the loss of the "little falcon Verochka" and vows to avenge the fascist invaders.

The third section is dedicated to letters from soldiers who took part in military actions in Afghanistan and other hot spots. A bridge between past and present is formed by letters from the wives of servicemen participating in the special military operation.

The historical context for each letter is provided by photographs, documents and household items from the corresponding eras. The exhibition also features postage stamps and postcards dedicated to war heroes and important historical events, which add additional artistic value to the display.

Additionally, some letters at the exhibition can not only be read but also heard using a special QR code. In the hush of the museum the lines that reflect love and attachment, care and anxiety, the apprehension before battle and the readiness to defend the Motherland to the last drop of blood sound especially poignant.
