How did the evolution of the male ideal take place on the Russian stage? Who were the idols of the 19th-century public? How did the status of the leading actor unexpectedly shift from the majestic tragedian, who embodied heroes of the classical repertoire, to the comic, and then to the intellectual “neurasthenics” of the Silver Age?

We will talk about the stately and loud Aleksey Yakovlev and Vasily Karatygin, about the “Pythia” Pavel Mochalov, about the cheerful and very different Nikolai Dyure and Alexander Martynov, about Vasily Samoylov, who could be literally anyone, and then trace how they were succeeded by actors seemingly made for the heroes of Chekhov and Ibsen. You will see the history of theatre from a new angle.

Lecturer — theatre scholar and museum research associate Irina Gaidova.
