Exhibition Complex «Vologda at the Turn of the 19th–20th Centuries»
About museum
The exhibition complex “Vologda at the Turn of the 19th–20th Centuries” is located in a merchant's estate composed of three buildings: a shop, a merchant's mansion, and a tenement house. All the buildings belonged to Alexander Pavlovich Samarin at the beginning of the 20th century, so the museum branch is sometimes simply called the House of Merchant Samarin. The architecture of the buildings is typical of wooden Vologda domestic construction of that time and includes elements of provincial Art Nouveau and classical style. The museum's exhibitions introduce visitors to the lifestyle of Vologda merchants and townspeople at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The tenement house contains a memorial apartment where M. M. Ulyanova lived with her mother in 1912–1914. Exhibitions held here include “Vologda at the Turn of the Centuries”, “A Lesson in the Old School”, “In the House of Merchant Samarin”, and “Traditions of the Russian Feast”. The museum also presents the exhibition “Relics of the Samarin House”, which tells the history of the house and its owners. The site attracts many visitors who want to see the architecture and learn the history of Merchant Samarin's house.
