Voskresensky Military Cathedral
About museum
Voskresensky Military Cathedral is the first stone church in Omsk; its foundation was laid on June 8, 1769. Construction took four years, and an iconostasis was installed inside. The first three altars were consecrated in the names of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh, the Resurrection of Christ, and the Holy Great Martyr Catherine. Many well-known travelers and scholars expressed admiration for it. The cathedral was also connected with the fate of F. M. Dostoevsky, who was an exiled convict and prayed in the church. In 1856 the notable Russian painter M. A. Vrubel was baptized here, and in 1891 the future Emperor Nicholas II prayed here. The cathedral housed a large spiritual library as well as many relics. It served as a cultural, educational, and charitable center of Omsk. In the 1920s services at the church were discontinued, and in 1958 the cathedral was dismantled. In 2016, on the 300th anniversary of Omsk, it was rebuilt.
