Walls and Towers of the Novgorod Kremlin
About museum
The Novgorod Kremlin is one of the oldest monuments of military-defensive architecture in Russia from the 15th–17th centuries. It is located on an area of 12.1 hectares, around which runs a deep moat. The length of the fortress walls is 1,487 m, and their height and thickness range from 8 to 15 m and from 3.6 to 6.5 m respectively. Of the twelve towers that existed in the Detinets in the 15th century, nine have survived. The Novgorod Kremlin was the religious, political, and cultural center of the Novgorod land. Here you can see Russia's oldest church, St. Sophia Cathedral (1045–1050), the oldest secular building — the Vladychnaya (Faceted) Chamber (1433), and other monuments from the 15th–19th centuries. In the center of the Kremlin stands the Millennium of Russia monument (1862). The ensemble of the Novgorod Kremlin is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, and its walls and towers welcome visitors to various interactive exhibitions and installations.
