The gallery is located in the historic city center on the banks of the Volga River. The permanent exhibition houses priceless monuments of icon painting and canvases by I. Levitan, V. Surikov, I. Repin, V. Serov, B. Kustodiev, K. Petrov-Vodkin and other well-known Russian and foreign artists from the collection of the Chuvash State Art Museum.
The section of Old Russian art (icon, sculpture, metalwork, books) includes icons from Cheboksary churches of the Moscow school of the 16th–18th centuries, as well as signed and dated 19th-century icons, among them works by local icon painters (A. Rukavishnikov and F. Sokolov); old printed books of the 17th–18th centuries; printed church books of the 19th–20th centuries from the Synodal, Edinoverie printing houses and Moscow Old Believer printing presses.
Russian easel painting is represented by such eminent names as F.S. Rokotov, V.L. Borovikovsky, V.A. Tropinin, I.K. Aivazovsky, I.N. Kramskoi, V.G. Perov, A.I. Kuindzhi, I.I. Levitan, V.D. Polenov.
The period of the 1890s and the early 20th century is represented by works of outstanding masters: K.A. Korovin, V.A. Serov, R.R. Falk, K.S. Petrov-Vodkin, B.M. Kustodiev. Works by artists from notable movements are also exhibited – 'World of Art', 'Jack of Diamonds', 'Four Arts', 'Union of Russian Artists', etc.
The 1920s–1930s are represented by works of AKhRR artists who visited Chuvashia (N.S. Kozochkin, F.S. Bogorodsky, G.G. Ryazhsky, etc.), as well as works by artists of other trends (Z.E. Serebryakova, V.V. Lebedev, P.V. Kuznetsov, etc.). The work of N.I. Feshin is particularly well represented; the collection of his works ranks second (after the city of Kazan).
The section of foreign art is represented by Meissen and Sèvres porcelain of the 18th century, and among the rather small number of old paintings stands out a 15th-century work by R. Gloster. Contemporary foreign art is represented by graphics by Zuhdi Chakolli (b. 1939, Yugoslavia), paintings by Natalia Khimirski (Bulgaria), and others.
