Birobidzhan Regional Museum of Local History
About museum
The Regional Museum of Local History was established on September 5, 1944 by decision of the executive committee of the Jewish Autonomous Oblast and the krai executive committee. On June 10, 1945 the museum opened its doors to visitors for the first time. It consisted of several sections: 'Nature of the Region', 'Industry and Agriculture', 'Cultural Construction', and 'Jewish Culture'. Until 1989, the exhibits were dominated by materials on the development of the national economy from the period of 'developed socialism', reflecting the ideology of the ruling Communist Party. In 2002–2003 the museum was closed for re-exhibition. The artistic design of the exhibition was created and executed by A. A. Suchkov, a member of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation from Khabarovsk. The museum now features various halls: 'Nature of the JAO', 'History of the Russian Settlement of the Amur Region', 'Archaeological Past', 'The Civil War in the Far East', 'The Jewish Autonomous Oblast during the Great Patriotic War (World War II)', 'History of the Formation of the JAO', and 'Contemporary History of the Region'.
