A. V. Anokhin National Museum of the Altai Republic
About museum
The A. V. Anokhin National Museum was founded in October 1918 after the purchase by the well-known Siberian local historian N. S. Gulyaev of a paleontological, archaeological and mineralogical collection, library and archive. The museum presents ancient and more recent artifacts, as well as the mummy of a woman of the Pazyryk culture of the 5th–3rd centuries BC, known as the "Ukok Princess." In the museum's inner courtyard one can see a log tomb of a Scythian chieftain of the 5th–3rd centuries BC, which is the oldest and largest wooden burial chamber in the world. The museum also has a hall dedicated to shamanism as a particular worldview, containing items and artifacts belonging to different ethnic groups of the Altai. The A. V. Anokhin National Museum is one of the most interesting and unique places to visit in the Altai region.
