Museum "Simbirsk Classical Gymnasium"
About museum
The museum tells the story of the establishment and development of secondary education in the Russian Empire. The memorial setting allows you to feel the atmosphere of an old educational institution of the 1880s. Interiors of classrooms, the assembly hall, the physics cabinet and the cloakroom are recreated with maximum authenticity. You can sit at a gymnasium desk, read textbooks used in the gymnasium course, see the only sundial from the 1840s in Russia made by the Borgard trading house, and even boil water with a single touch of your hand using a working physics device — Franklin's boiler. The building of the former Simbirsk Classical Gymnasium is a historic monument. The main building was constructed in 1790 to a design by architect I. Toscani, and in 1883 a red brick annex was added. Among the gymnasium's graduates were V. I. Ulyanov (Lenin), I. Ya. Yakovlev, M. N. Bogdanov, S. A. Buturlin, D. D. Minaev, D. I. Sadovnikov, V. P. Filatov.
