Museum of Nonconformist Art

About museum

Nonconformism was a phenomenon in the unofficial culture of the Soviet period that manifested itself in visual arts, music (the Leningrad rock scene) and literature (samizdat). During this period famous figures emerged such as M. Shemyakin, V. Tsoi, S. Kurekhin, T. Novikov, S. Bugaev (Afrika), the group Mitki, B. Grebenshchikov, I. Brodsky and others. In 1998 the Museum of Nonconformist Art was founded to preserve and study the heritage of the USSR's unofficial culture. Its collection includes more than 3,000 works. The museum collaborates with various museums and galleries in Russia, Europe and the USA, as well as with specialized universities. It stages more than 70 exhibitions and events at the legendary art center Pushkinskaya-10, which was founded by independent creative figures in 1989. The museum is a member of the ICOM network.
