Museum of the History of Exploration and Development of the European North
About museum
The Museum-Archive of the History of the Exploration and Development of the European North of Russia in the city of Apatity, Murmansk Oblast, has existed for 40 years. It all began in the early 1970s, when museums were in great demand. Today it is a structural subdivision of a branch of the Kola Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the status of a research museum. The museum-archive has gained new exhibition spaces and a qualitatively different exhibition program, and the museum's research potential has been renewed. It houses traditional archival materials, archaeological collections, household items and folk crafts of the indigenous population, scientific instruments, and works by 19th–20th century artists brought from the Far North. All of this was beautifully arranged by A. N. Shevnin, a member of the Union of Artists of Russia. The museum-archive continues to study, preserve, and exhibit materials, allowing visitors to gain a complete understanding of the history and culture of the Far North.
