N. V. Ignatyev Literary and Art Museum
About museum
On June 10, 1995, in the village of Chalomkino, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of N. V. Ignatyev, a classic of Hill Mari literature, the Literary and Art Museum was opened. It houses exhibition and display halls with panels dedicated to poets, writers, scholars, artists, and workers of culture and education. A feature of the museum is the weaving of the belt from the Hill Mari costume, reproduced here in the form of master classes. In addition, the exhibition includes mammoth tusks, the skulls of a bison and a rhinoceros, as well as teeth of ancient animals discovered in the Gornomariy District. In the district there is an ancient Paleolithic hunters' campsite at Yunga-Kusherga, more than 30,000 years old. Thus, the museum is not only a place of remembrance for N. V. Ignatyev but also the oldest archaeological monument in the Gornomariy District.
