Local History Museum of the Egvekinot Urban District
About museum
The Egvekinot Local History Museum was founded on February 10, 1985, after the opening of the first local history exhibition. The main materials for that exhibition and the subsequent museum collection were gathered over 10 years by a group of schoolchildren called "Poisk" (Search). They were related to the history of aircraft ferrying along the "Alaska — Siberia" route during the Great Patriotic War. In the first year of operation 754 items were collected; today the museum's holdings number more than 20,000 items. The museum features a rich ethnographic collection that reveals the life and everyday activities of people in Chukotka from prehistoric times. Visitors can also learn about the region's natural wealth through the mineralogical exhibits. In addition, the museum covers significant events from the Soviet period, such as ALSIB, the GULAG, the geological exploration of Chukotka, and construction. The exhibition hall regularly hosts presentations on topical subjects.
