Korsakov Historical and Local Lore Museum
About museum
Korsakov Historical and Local Lore Museum was established in 1983 on the basis of the district House of Culture 'Okean'. In 1993 the Small Council of People's Deputies decided to open a city museum at 22 Krasnoflotskaya St. The museum's collections were gathered by residents of the town and district. Special attention is paid to the city's history from 1853 and to the period of 'Karafuto' and 'katorga' (penal servitude). In 1869 the Korsakov post was established as a place of penal servitude and exile. In 1890 A. P. Chekhov came to the town to conduct a population census, to process registration cards for prisoners and exiles, and to provide medical assistance. The museum attracts visitors with the town's interesting history and Chekhov's period of stay there.
