Kargopol Bell Tower
About museum
In 1767-1778 the Cathedral Bell Tower was erected on the central square of Kargopol. Funds for its construction were allocated from the state treasury in connection with the catastrophic fire of 1765 that devastated the entire town. This three-tiered tower, with a tall spire and a gilded cross, is the vertical dominant in Kargopol's linear layout and features Catherine II's emblem on the central façade. From it begins Leningradskaya Street, which led the town to overland transit routes to St. Petersburg, Moscow, Arkhangelsk, and Petrozavodsk. In 1997 the Cathedral Bell Tower was transferred to the Kargopol Museum.
