Gnezdovo Historical, Archaeological and Natural Museum-Reserve
About museum
For those interested in Russian history, Gnezdovo means a great deal. It is the largest archaeological complex in Russia and Europe to be placed under state protection. It is located on the banks of the Dnieper River, 13 km from Smolensk. At present the complex comprises about 1,500 burial mounds and one settlement. As a result of a decision by the Council of Ministers of the RSFSR and the Executive Committee of the Smolensk Regional Council of Workers' Deputies, the boundaries of protection zones, zones regulating construction and economic activities, and the regime for the maintenance and use of the lands were approved. In 2011 the Gnezdovo Historical, Archaeological and Natural Museum-Reserve was established to ensure the integrity of the monument, its historical environment and the surrounding landscapes, and to promote cultural and natural heritage.
