Fyodor Solntsev. "Patriarch Nikon with His Clergy", Chromolithograph
The sheet reproduces a parsuna, an early Russian portrait in which Patriarch Nikon is shown in full episcopal vestments together with the brethren of the New Jerusalem Monastery. The drawing for the lithograph was made by the academician Fyodor Solntsev, the leading draughtsman of Russian antiquities in the mid-19th century.
The date of 1849–1853 and the numbering of the sheet ("Section I, sheet No. 94") match the publication "Antiquities of the Russian State", which appeared in those years by order of Nicholas I. It comprised six sections; its 500 colour chromolithographs were made after Solntsev's drawings.
Below the image are the captions "Chromolithograph by F. Dreger" and "Drawn by Academician F. Solntsev", and beneath them the title "Patriarch Nikon with His Clergy" repeated in French. The sheet is printed on handmade paper and set in a grey wooden frame with ornament and metal mounts.
