In 1991 it was transformed into a cultural institution and moved into a specially constructed building. Since the museum's founding Elena Vasilievna Nikishova has worked at the museum (42 years), currently as a lecturer-guide. From 1991 to the present the director, and at the moment the museum's head, is Tatyana Anatolyevna Shashanova (30 years).
The museum has about 2,500 exhibits, 12 permanent exhibitions are on display, and temporary thematic exhibitions are regularly organized for notable dates of the district and the country. Guided tours on local history topics are held with slide-based computer presentations.
One of the most important directions of the museum staff's work is the moral and patriotic education of the younger generation. To this end various types of activities are used: educational and outreach, research, and publishing.
