Postnikov Courtyard

About museum

Museum complex 'Postnikov Courtyard' — an object of the State Budgetary Cultural Institution 'Pskovo-Izborsk United Museum-Reserve'. In the 17th century the Postnikovs were one of the famous merchant families who occupied the chambers. During the reign of Peter I the building was used as an ordonnanzhaus (commandant's administration). It is believed that Peter I visited the house during his trips to Pskov in the early 18th century.

\r\nDuring the Great Northern War the building housed the headquarters of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian army Boris P. Sheremetev. In 1784 the buildings were sold to a banking office. It was during this period that the Pskov official Nikolai Rezanov was sent to the banking office to work on the exchange of banknotes — he later became a well-known traveler. Later the house was assigned to military units, and for a time these buildings served as a prison. Hence their nickname — 'Meshok', and the street on which they stood became known as Meshkovskaya.

\r\nThe buildings suffered significant damage as a result of military action during World War II. Restoration and repair work was carried out in 2016–2020.

\r\nToday it houses exhibition halls with the exhibitions 'Three Centuries of the Postnikov Courtyard' (archaeology, household items, weapons collection, a poster exhibition of drawings of the merchant chambers by restorer Yu. P. Spegalsky), a museum educational center with the children's museum 'Visiting Professor Meshok' and a park of forged sculptures by the famous artist-restorer Evgeny Vagin.
