Central Research Geological Prospecting Museum named after Academician F.N. Chernyshev
About museum
The history of the museum continues to this day. On January 19, 1882, Emperor Alexander III approved the "Regulation on the Geological Committee of Russia." It recorded as one of its tasks the collection of rocks and minerals to form systematic collections. However, due to the lack of its own premises, the Geological Committee experienced great difficulties. In 1912 F.N. Chernyshev secured designated funds for the construction of a building. A plot of land on Vasilievsky Island was allocated for this purpose, and a building was constructed according to the architects' design. In 1930 the museum was established as an independent institution and officially opened to visitors. It was named after Academician F.N. Chernyshev, and in 1935 it became a research institution. The history of the museum continues to this day.
