Architectural and artistic ensemble of the former Spaso‑Yakovlevsky Monastery
About museum
Architectural and artistic ensemble of the former Spaso‑Yakovlevsky Monastery occupies a complex of sacred buildings founded in 1386 by Bishop Jacob of Rostov. On the shore of Lake Nero a remarkable monastic ensemble grew up, now a monument of national significance. It includes church structures of historical and artistic value: the Dmitrievsky Cathedral, the Transfiguration (Spaso‑Preobrazhensky) Cathedral and a cemetery. The site attracts not only pilgrims but also numerous tourists. The brotherhood warmly welcomes visitors and offers guided tours of the monastery complex, as well as the opportunity to climb the observation tower, which provides a magnificent view of the town and Lake Nero. Visitors can also see the healing spring of St. Jacob and a small wooden chapel. This monastery has a rich history spanning more than six centuries. Originally two monastic foundations were established here: the women’s Monastery of the Transfiguration (Spasa Preobrazheniya) and the Zachatyevsky Church.
