Architectural and artistic ensemble of the former Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery
About museum
The architectural and artistic ensemble of the former Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery encompasses a complex of sacred buildings founded in 1386 by Bishop Jacob of Rostov. On the shore of Lake Nero a remarkable monastic ensemble grew up, which has become a monument of national significance. It includes church buildings of historical and artistic value: the Dmitrievsky Cathedral, the Spaso-Preobrazhensky (Transfiguration) Cathedral, and a cemetery. The site attracts not only pilgrims but also numerous tourists. The brethren warmly welcome visitors and conduct tours of the monastic complex, and also provide the opportunity to climb the observation tower, from which there is a magnificent view of the town and Lake Nero. Visitors can also see the healing spring of Saint Jacob and a small wooden chapel. This monastery has a rich history spanning more than six centuries. Originally two monastic foundations were established here: the women's Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior and the Zachatyevsky Church.
