Valeria Vladimirovna Barsova was a Russian and Soviet opera singer, teacher, and public figure. She was born in Astrakhan into the family of a printing-house employee. At seventeen she decided to devote her life to music and left her native town. In 1919 Barsova graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, where she received training in two specialties – piano and solo singing.
 
Barsova gained her first experience on the opera stage in Moscow in 1917. In 1919 she sang with Fyodor Chaliapin in the opera "The Barber of Seville." From 1920 to 1948 she was a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre of the USSR. Beginning in 1929, Barsova took part in foreign tours with the Bolshoi Theatre company. From 1950 to 1953 she taught at the Moscow Conservatory, and in 1952 she was awarded the title of professor.
 
Barsova was awarded the title People's Artist of the USSR in 1937 and received the USSR State Prize in 1941 for outstanding achievements in the field of vocal art. Valeria Vladimirovna Barsova passed away on December 13, 1967, in Sochi.
