Peter I

About museum

The future emperor Peter I, born in 1672, after his father's death ascended the throne together with his brother Ivan V, during the temporary rule of their sister Sophia. His childhood was spent in villages near Moscow, where he created 'toy' regiments—the foundation of the future army. Possessing a wide range of skills (including foreign languages and crafts), Peter I secretly traveled to Europe, where he studied shipbuilding and artillery. During his reign Russia was transformed: a new capital, Saint Petersburg, was founded, administrative reform was carried out, and industry and education developed. Peter I personally led military campaigns, securing access to the Sea of Azov and, after victory in the Great Northern War, to the Baltic Sea. The Pruth campaign ended unsuccessfully, while the Persian campaign was successful, bringing Russia new territories on the Caspian. Peter I's death in 1725 is attributed to pneumonia, although there is a legend that the sovereign died from complications after participating in the rescue of sailors.
