Pyotr Tarasovich Maltsev was a Soviet painter, People's Artist of the USSR (1974). He was the author of works on military-historical subjects and a creator of dioramas. Maltsev was born on December 8, 1907 in Mariupol into a working-class family. From 1921 to 1930 he received his artistic education first at the Zaporizhzhia Art and Vocational School, then at VKhUTEMAS.
During the Great Patriotic War Maltsev served as an artist in the Northern Fleet. He produced many posters praising the feats of Soviet soldiers. After the war, in 1949, he became a member of the M. B. Grekov Studio of Military Artists.
Maltsev created many well-known works, among them the paintings "Guards' Ships on the March", "The Feat of Red Fleet Sailor Ivan Golubets", the diorama "Suvorov's Alpine Campaign", and the diorama "Storming of Sapun Hill". Pyotr Tarasovich Maltsev died on October 5, 1993 in Moscow and was buried at the Troyekurovskoye Cemetery.
