Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov was a Soviet mathematician, an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929). Twice a Hero of Socialist Labour (1945, 1971). Laureate of the Lenin Prize (1972) and the USSR State Prize (1983) and the Stalin Prize, first degree (1941). He was born in the village of Milolyub in the Pskov region into a priest's family and received his secondary education at a real school. In 1910 he entered Saint Petersburg University. After graduating in 1914 he was retained there for preparation for a professorship. He obtained a doctoral degree.

From 1918 to 1920 Vinogradov worked at Perm and Tomsk universities. In 1920 he received the title of professor and continued his work at Leningrad University, while also teaching at the Polytechnic Institute. In 1929 Vinogradov was elected an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and in 1932 he headed the V. A. Steklov Mathematical Institute. From 1934 he lived and worked in Moscow.
 
Vinogradov held leadership positions in scientific organizations. He was editor-in-chief of the journal "Izvestiya AN SSSR. Seriya matematicheskaya" (Proceedings of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Mathematical Series), chairman of the National Committee of Soviet Mathematicians, and editor-in-chief of the "Mathematical Encyclopedia." Ivan Matveevich Vinogradov died on March 20, 1983 in Moscow and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
