In the museum's halls the major milestones in the history of the city of Irkutsk are presented, from its founding to the present day. Visitors will see unique ancient artifacts: tools of prehistoric humans, pottery, arrows, jade knives, and a model of an excavation with a burial. Here you can also explore the museum's ethnographic collection. Visitors will learn interesting facts about the city's formation, about the people who made it famous, about the famous merchant dynasties and their notable representatives; they will see models of the Irkutsk ostrog (fortress) and the Voznesensky (Ascension) Men's Monastery. Irkutsk in the 20th century is presented separately: the difficult years of revolutionary unrest, the civil war, industrialization, the years of the Great Patriotic War (World War II), and the city's postwar development.
