Exhibition "The Station District 1893–1917"
About exhibition
The exhibition tells the story of how one of the oldest parts of the city of Novosibirsk appeared and changed, and what the first settlers did and how they lived at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries. In the exposition you can see the uniform of a neighborhood police inspector and of a railway track engineer of the Russian Empire, the famous "Katenki" and judge their size. Also on display are a gramophone, antique tableware, many samovars and a few other items... The name of the Station part of the city became established when Novo-Nikolaevsk obtained the status of a city without uyezd on December 28, 1903, when three police precincts were created – Vokzalny (Station), Central and Zakamensky. The names of the city parts were used when giving house addresses and in local newspapers and directories. At the beginning of the 20th century the Station district became the center of the public and cultural life of the young city. Engineers and officials of the Ministry of Railways preferred to live on Vladimirovskaya Street, which ran parallel to the Trans-Siberian Railway. It was the most well-appointed street, with a paved surface and electric street lamps. The blocks of the district were considered the most prestigious in the city. Wealthy merchants and townspeople settled in the Station part, opening their shops and running stores there.
