The 'Gorokhovaya, 2. The History of the Political Police and State Security Bodies of Russia. 19th–20th centuries' department is located in a mansion built at the end of the 18th century to a design by architect Giacomo Quarenghi. The permanent exhibition 'The History of the Political Police and State Security Bodies of Russia. 19th–20th centuries' is devoted to the history of Russia's special services from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century. A special place in the exhibition is occupied by the first working office of the chairman of the Cheka–OGPU, F. E. Dzerzhinsky. The department's exhibition projects highlight the activities of Russia's special services, and their place and role in the political system of society.
