In September 1879, Tsiolkovsky in Ryazan passed an external examination to qualify as a mathematics teacher, and in January 1880, having received his first appointment, he arrived in the old Russian town of Borovsk to take up the post of acting teacher of arithmetic and geometry at the district school. Thus fate tied Tsiolkovsky to the Kaluga region for the rest of his life. In Borovsk Konstantin Eduardovich started a family. In his landlord's house he met his future loyal life companion Varvara Evgrafovna Sokolova. One of the central parts of the apartment museum's exhibition is a reconstruction of "Tsiolkovsky's creative laboratory of the 1880s–1890s", created on the basis of Tsiolkovsky's autobiographies, memories of his wife and eldest daughter, and contemporaries.
