Exhibition building "Packhouse"
About museum
On the site where the Museum of the World Ocean now stands there used to be a port. The construction of the port complex in Königsberg dates back to the 17th century. For a long time it was periodically rebuilt and altered. In the mid-19th century port warehouses were constructed, which today house the exhibition building "Packhouse". At the same time a quay wall and cobbled pavement were added to the site. During the 19th century a railway bridge was built here, followed by a large rail junction that allowed cargo to be transferred from the port warehouses and sent to its destinations. During World War II the area along the Pregel River was destroyed. Between 2000 and 2003 the museum restored the quay wall and pavement, and the buildings were restored in 2006–2007. Today the port facilities, quay wall, cobbled pavement, railway bridge and a set of open-air museum exhibits allow visitors to feel as if they are in a corner of the mid-19th-century old town.
