Vvedenskaya Church, Kargopol
About museum
The first mention of the Church of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Theotokos dates back to 1561–1564, when the Sotnya census was conducted. At that time it was wooden, but in 1765, after a fire, it was rebuilt in stone and consecrated in 1811. At the initiative of the merchant Alexander Lavrentyevich Lavrentyev, in 1871 an altar was installed in the church in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. During the Patriotic War of 1812 the church's cellar stored property of the imperial household. In 1872 a memorial service was held here for the historian-slavist and collector of byliny Alexander Fedorovich Hilferding, who died in Kargopol. In 1923 services in the church were discontinued and the building was transferred to the city utilities. In 1933 a museum was opened here, which currently houses the exhibition "Kargopolye from Ancient Times".
