Urkarakh Historical and Local History Museum
About museum
Visitors to the Urkarakh Museum — a branch of the National Museum of Dagestan named after A. Taho-Godi — can learn about the famous crafts of the villages of the Dakhadayevsky District. Sulevkent, known for more than 500 years as a center of pottery, is noted for its functional ceramics with simple decoration. The museum houses specimens from the 18th century to contemporary works, and also presents the daily life of Sulevkent residents. Kharbuk, known since ancient times as a village of gunsmiths, was a center for the production of pistols, rifles, daggers, sabers and knives; its craftsmen included women. The museum has collected more than 70 examples of Kharbuk blacksmithing, and visitors will learn about the history of the craft and its famous masters. The Dakhadayevsky District has long been renowned for its stone-carving art, and the museum holds more than 50 examples of carved stone. In the village of Kisha the art of woodcarving flourished even in the 20th century, and the museum preserves about 150 carved wood items. Visitors can also learn about the legendary village of Kubachi.
