Tver Regional Art Gallery. Tver Imperial Palace
About museum
Tver Regional Art Gallery was founded in 1866 and was part of the "Tver Museum." In 1937 the gallery became an independent museum, and today it houses about 40,000 exhibits. The collection includes works of Old Russian art from the 14th–20th centuries; Russian painting, graphic art and sculpture of the 18th–20th centuries; Western European art of the 15th–20th centuries; and decorative and applied arts of Russia, Europe and the East. All of this is presented in the building of the Tver Imperial Palace, built for Empress Catherine II in the 18th century to a design by the great Russian urban planner Pyotr Romanovich Nikitin-Tverskoy. The gallery holds exhibitions and various events for children and adults. Visitors can enjoy the history of the palace, which changed its appearance over two centuries and reflects the styles and tastes of different eras.
