Sovetsky District Local History Museum
About museum
The Sovetsky District Local History Museum — one of the oldest museums in the Kirov Region — was opened on June 16, 1910, at the initiative of amateur local historian A. S. Lebedev. From 1919 to 1922 there were two museums at this location: a local lore museum and a museum of art and antiquities. In 1922 they were merged into a single scientific and artistic museum, which from 1936 began to be called a local history museum. In 1985 the museum moved to new premises, and in 1986–1991 new exhibitions were created together with artists from Kirov art-production workshops. The museum has a small team of creative staff — only four people: the director and three employees. They continuously work on improving the quality of events and on finding new forms of cultural and educational activities. Each year the museum is visited by approximately 17,000 people. In recent years 14 local history publications have been issued about the history of the town and district and about its residents. The museum collection comprises more than 15,000 items in the main collection and more than 10,000 in the research/auxiliary collection.
