The museum attracts many visitors interested in the history and culture of Sevsk.
The museum was founded in 1921 and consists of three departments: natural history, Sevsk antiquities, and modern history. One of the main exhibits is mammoth bones and a replica of a baby mammoth skeleton. Also notable is a model of the Sevsk fortress, which defended the southwestern borders of the Muscovite state. The ancient history section includes icons, church books, chains, as well as materials on the Sevsk Regiment, which liberated Bulgaria in 1877–1878, and on natives of Sevsk: the rector of Moscow University I. G. Petrovsky and the writer P. L. Proskurin. The museum attracts many visitors interested in the history and culture of Sevsk. It provides insight into the traditions and characteristics of an Orthodox center that existed on the territory of Sevsk in the 17th century. Outstanding people lived and worked here, leaving an indisputable legacy to Sevsk's prosperity.
