The Russian Museum of Photography was opened on September 21, 1992 at the initiative of the public. In 2000 it became state-owned. It is the oldest photography museum in Russia, located in a 19th-century building protected by law as a historical and cultural monument. Famous photographers Andrey Karelin and Maxim Dmitriev worked here. The museum's collections contain more than 212,000 items, including daguerreotypes, negatives, stereo negatives, positives, postcards, cameras, enlargers, photo albums, medals, letters and other personal belongings of photographers. The collections include works by Andrey Karelin, Maxim Dmitriev and other authors, as well as photographic equipment from the 19th–21st centuries, stereophotographs, holograms, a camera obscura, a photoplasticon, and a photo laboratory. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions, photography masterclasses and photo festivals at the regional, Russian and international levels.
