Monument-Museum Znamensky Cathedral
About museum
Znamensky Cathedral, located on Ilyina Street near the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was built at the end of the 17th century and is the most “non-Novgorod” church in the city, its style more closely resembling the architecture of Moscow and the Volga region. On the northern fence of the building there are two bays decorated with paintings. Inside are scenes illustrating the earthly life of Christ and the deeds of the apostles, as well as the Akathist to the Mother of God. The frescoes and iconostases, together with applied arts and music, create a harmonious and beautiful artistic ensemble. Despite fires, repairs, and war, Znamensky Cathedral remains a monument of architecture and monumental painting that attracts many visitors.
