National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan named after A. Taho-Godi
About museum
In 1913 the first museum in the entire pre-revolutionary history of the Dagestan region was opened. The idea of its creation belonged to the Russian doctor I. S. Kostemerevsky. He did much to raise the cultural level of the mountain peoples and dreamed of opening a museum where the best examples of Dagestani craftsmen's work and other materials on the history and culture of the region could be presented. In 1891 Kostemerevsky bequeathed a significant part of his savings for these purposes. However, it was only 22 years later that the decision to open the museum was made. It features an ethnographic collection as well as various weapons (Russian, European, Eastern and local production). Thus, I. S. Kostemerevsky gave the people of Dagestan an invaluable gift in the form of a museum, which is not only a historical monument but also an important cultural heritage.
