The Penates Museum-Estate is a true living chronicle of Russian culture.
Located 45 kilometres from Saint Petersburg is the I. E. Repin Museum-Estate 'Penates'. It is in the settlement of Repino (formerly Kuokkala), situated on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. In 1939 a museum was opened here under the patronage of the Russian Academy of Arts. This is the place of the last 30 years of Ilya Yefimovich Repin's life, and he wished to be buried here. During the war the estate was damaged, but it was restored in the 1950s and 1960s. Today the museum displays the artist's personal belongings, his paintings and drawings, as well as works by his son and other Russian painters. The exhibition contains more than 600 works of painting and graphic art. The memorial appearance of the rooms belonging to the owner has been preserved in the house. Visitors can view the exhibition, watch newsreels, tour the memorial park and the surroundings that inspired many Russian artists and writers.
