Sviyazhsk History Museum
About museum
In Sviyazhsk there is a place of great historical significance - a complex of government buildings constructed according to a standard design for administrative buildings of a 19th-century district town. The main building housed the administration and treasury of Sviyazhsk Uyezd, while three buildings in the courtyard served as the district prison. In the 1940s all the buildings were taken over by the NKVD. The main building (Building No. 1) contains an exhibition on the history of Sviyazhsk from 1551 to the beginning of the 20th century, as well as displays on the activities of Archbishop Herman II and the foundation of the Assumption Monastery. Building No. 2 presents Sviyazhsk’s history in the 20th–21st centuries on various themes, and Building No. 3 houses an exhibition on the history of Sviyazhsk prisons. Finally, Building No. 4 contains an exhibition hall for temporary exhibitions. Visiting this site will give you a deep understanding of Sviyazhsk’s history.
