Museum of the History of Monchegorsk
About museum
On November 3, 1980, the first exhibition of the Museum of the History of Monchegorsk was opened in a cottage on Tsarevsky Street. This date is considered the museum's founding day. Previously the museum was a branch of the Murmansk Regional Museum, but at the end of 1999 it was transferred to the municipal ownership of the city of Monchegorsk.
The museum currently has 5,780 collection items, 12,400 visits per year, as well as an exhibition area of 164 sq. m and a collection storage of 20 sq. m. It presents four exhibitions: 'Protected Lapland', 'The City in the Beautiful Tundra', 'The Turbulent War Years', 'The City at the Turn of the Century'. In addition, the museum offers an interactive tour of the city-forming enterprise — the Severonickel plant — and of the Lapland Nature Reserve.
The museum staff regularly publishes printed materials that can be purchased together with a variety of souvenir products available at the museum. In addition, the city festivals 'Night of Museums' and 'Koampal Yy' are held here annually, and the museum hosts the Monchegorsk History Enthusiasts Club and the Collectors' Club.
