Maltsov Crystal Museum
About museum
Documented mentions of the settlement Gusskaya Volost date back to the 17th century. In 1756 the Maltsov merchants began construction of a glass manufactory in the Shivorovo tract on the Gus River; it was from this that the city of Gus-Khrustalny got its name. The city is located in the Meshchera region on the Gus River, 63 km south of Vladimir. Since 1983 the Maltsov Crystal Museum has been housed in the unique architectural monument of the late 19th–early 20th centuries — the St. George's Cathedral. Here, in a single ensemble, the works of Russian architect L. N. Benois, the paintings of artist V. M. Vasnetsov, and glass and crystal pieces by old masters and contemporary craftsmen are harmoniously combined. Thanks to the cathedral's magical acoustics, the international choral and chamber music festival "Crystal Lyre" is held there every two years.
