Central Naval Museum
About museum
In 1957 the Museum of the Baltic Fleet was founded in Baltiysk and was opened to the public on 23 February 1959. Three years later the museum was moved to Tallinn, where it continued to develop for thirty years. In 1992, due to the withdrawal of fleet forces from the Baltic states, a decision was made to relocate the museum to the town of Baltiysk. It is housed in a building constructed in 1903, which until 1945 accommodated the judicial authorities of the town of Pillau. The museum's collections include more than 20,000 items: photographs, documents, ship models, weapons, works of fine art and insignia. Among the unique exhibits are the helm of the imperial yacht Polar Star, the office of Vice-Admiral S. O. Makarov, ship models, documents and personal items of the foremost commanders of the Baltic Fleet, as well as boarding weapons and small arms, and breast badges.
