About museum
The museum was founded in October 1988 by the leader of the "Poisk" group, A.B. Komarov; it opened its doors to visitors on November 1, 1989. The museum's collections were assembled by gathering information (including memoirs of war and labor veterans), studying archival materials, and, above all, through numerous expeditions to remote areas of the Kola Peninsula. The area of the permanent exhibition is 340 sq. m, the exhibition area is 220 sq. m. The museum permanently displays more than 3,500 items. In addition to the already mentioned themes (Sami, Pomors, mineralogy), there are exhibition sections dedicated to GULAG prisoners, the nature of Murmansk Oblast, the early scientific exploration of the Lovozero tundras, and the founding of the settlement of Revda. The hall dedicated to the Great Patriotic War (World War II), specifically to the pilots of OMAG, is currently under reconstruction and closed to visitors. In 1997, employees of the museum of LLC "LGOK" discovered the Kanozero petroglyphs, now recognized as a historical monument of global significance.
