Historical, Artistic and Literary Museum‑Reserve 'Abramtsevo'

The Abramtsevo Museum‑Reserve is located 60 km northeast of Moscow. In 1843 the writer S. T. Aksakov came here and created some of his best works. N. V. Gogol, I. S. Turgenev, M. P. Pogodin, M. S. Shchepkin and other notable figures visited him. In 1870 Abramtsevo was purchased by the railway industrialist, artist and impresario S. I. Mamontov. At that time it was visited by V. D. Polenov, V. M. Vasnetsov, I. E. Repin, I. S. Ostroukhov, V. A. Serov, K. A. Korovin, M. V. Nesterov, M. A. Vrubel and other well‑known people. This circle became known as the Abramtsevo art circle. After the 1917 Revolution the estate was nationalized and turned into a museum, but the creative traditions continued. In the 20th century I. E. Grabar, P. P. Konchalovsky, I. I. Mashkov, V. I. Mukhina, B. D. Korolev and other artists lived and worked here. The territory of the Abramtsevo Museum‑Reserve covers about 50 hectares and includes architectural monuments of the 18th–19th centuries, a park and the picturesque surroundings of the Vory River.
