The Irkutsk Regional Art Museum named after V. P. Sukachev is one of the oldest art museums in Russia. The collection was started by Vladimir Platonovich Sukachev, a prominent public figure, philanthropist and chairman of the Irkutsk Duma. In 1870 he began assembling his collection, which was transferred to the state in 1920. Today the museum holds over 24,000 works of painting, icon painting, graphics, sculpture and decorative and applied arts. It features works by masters from China, Mongolia and Buryatia from the 16th–19th centuries, unique ancient icons, works by famous Russian artists, as well as classical Western European art of the 17th–19th centuries. Temporary exhibitions are held regularly.
