Ilek People's Local History Museum
About museum
In 1961 the museum of the Ilek District was opened; it is the only museum in Russia dedicated to the history and culture of the local peoples. The museum holds more than 4,000 exhibits that help reveal the ancient history and culture of the district. Special attention is paid to the Cossack way of life, since the Ilek District is located within the territory of the Ural Cossack Host. The museum also displays a collection of mammoth and woolly rhinoceros bones found in deposits along the Ural River, as well as a copper award badge attached to a papakha. This museum is an example of how the memory and culture of local peoples can be preserved and passed on to future generations.
