Kholmogorsky District Local History Museum
About museum
In 2002 the Kholmogorsky Local History Museum was opened in an old merchant's house on the embankment by order of the Head of Kholmogorsky District. It preserved the few exhibits that had been collected by students of the Kholmogory school. The building housing the museum was built in 1906–1908 by industrialist D. F. Berdennikov and is a monument of regional significance. On the second floor there are seven halls presenting exhibitions on the history of Kholmogory, the life of local residents, notable people, and local crafts. The museum has 941 items in its main collection and 762 in the auxiliary collection, and also hosts events, guided tours, master classes, and exhibitions. Here visitors can touch the history of an ancient settlement in the northern White Sea region, learn about the secrets of the bishop's chambers, and learn about the origin of the Kholmogory cattle breed and the bone-carving craft.
