Catherine II as Themis, after a Model by Mikhail Kozlovsky
This bronze statue shows Empress Catherine II as Themis, the goddess of justice. Its model was a marble image of the empress by the celebrated sculptor Mikhail Ivanovich Kozlovsky (1753–1802), which is kept in the Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
A plaster cast was taken from the marble original, and the bronze monument was then cast from it with minor changes. The work was carried out in the workshop of S. P. Campioni in 1825–1826; the catalogue dates the casting to 1825. The statue belongs to Arkhangelskoye's collection of park sculpture, which numbers more than 200 pieces. The empress is also honoured in the estate's architecture: in 1819 Yevgraf Tyurin designed the Temple-Monument to Catherine II in the form of an antique temple.
Material: patinated bronze.
